Taking the view that cultural curiosity is a prerequisite to successful teaching of ELLs, a bicultural group of Salem educators developed a workshop on the history, culture, immigration patterns, and self-identity of the people of the Dominican Republic for mainstream teachers. Learn how this collaborative effort grew, flowered, and spread.

Nancy M. Meacham, M.Ed., is ELL Coordinator in the Salem Public Schools, and a Visiting Instructor in the Salem State University TESOL program.
Luz G. Villarreal, M.Ed., is a bicultural, bilingual ESL teacher with 15 years experience working with ELLs, and a member of Salem’s Latino Leadership Coalition.
Perla R. Peguero, MSW, is a bilingual, bicultural School Adjustment Counselor at the Saltonstall School, a K-8 public school in Salem, MA.
Berta Tavares, B.A.Ed., MHRM, teaches Spanish for the Salem Public Schools. She has also worked as a newcomer teacher, bilingual community liaison, and language evaluator.
