Knowledge Base

Session Description

In 2000, I co-founded Serials Solutions. Through 2007, I created and managed its knowledgebase, which contained only serials records. In 2016 I returned to work in a library, and discovered that in the intervening years, only ebook records had been added. Today, an electronic resources knowledgebase must contain far more than ebook and e-serial records. A viable electronic resources knowledgebase must contain records for essentially anything that would be cataloged elsewhere: movies, videos, images, audio recordings, manuscripts, data sets, transcripts, dissertations, and much, much more.

In this presentation, I will address what I see as the significant limitations of the knowledgebase I created 17 years ago, and why we librarians must demand a better, more meaningful, and more extensive knowledgebase for managing electronic resources. If Serials Solutions/Ex Libris/ProQuest choose not to create this knowledgebase, we must find or create a better alternative.
