Our talk will present data gathered from ~300 respondents in Central New Jersey surveyed about their usage of outdoor space and outdoor activities and environmentally responsible behaviors (ERBs).  The study region encompasses ~800km² includes a wide range of racial/ethnic, and socio-economic diversity in variegated landscape.

Overall research goals include quantifying and describing the roles of landscape, socio-cultural norms, and built environment on environmentally responsible behaviors (ERBs); as well as how this behavior is influenced by individuals utilize outdoor spaces.

We built a model demonstrating strong relationships between certain types, frequencies, and locations of outdoor activities co-occurring with engagement in ERBs.  Furthermore, we were able to demonstrate a lack of relationship between certain environmentally responsible behaviors and any socio-demographic or outdoor based behaviors.  For example, many pro-environmental consumer behaviors  - such as looking for products with less packaging – correlate with conservation behaviors – carrying a reusable mug (p=0.0105) or water bottle (0.0097).  However, turning off the faucet while brushing teeth correlated with almost no other ERBs.

Using principal components analysis on 28 ERB variables, we were able to account for half of the variation using 4 principal components.  A similar dimensionality reduction analysis was able to account for over half of the variation in the 15 items related to time outside using 4 principal components – with the heaviest loadings (0-1) being on the number of different activities respondents reported to engaging in outdoors (0.401) and the frequency of participation in these activities (0.393).

The survey data is being incorporated into a tool which also includes built and natural landscape data, municipal policy, and parks.  The goal is to build a planning tool and collaboration among local policy makers, residents, land managers and other stakeholders.  Through collaboration we aim to promote inclusive decision-making to promote community and environmental sustainability, resilience, and well-being.
