Abstract

We present results from our survey of Northern Wisconsin private forest landowners regarding woody biomass harvesting for bioenergy production. These landowners had forested properties within close proximity to a bioenergy production facility. Questions covered demographic characteristics, their attitudes toward government and the environment, familiarity with bioenergy, perceptions of bioenergy impacts, and intentions to harvest woody biomass for bioenergy. Just 11% intended future harvests of woody biomass for use in energy production. Membership in an environmental organization and perceptions of bioenergy production impacts were significantly associated with intent to harvest. No demographic characteristics were significantly associated with their harvest intentions. We present these and other findings and discuss implications for upper Midwestern bioenergy production as well as how state policies could change to encourage sustainable woody biomass harvesting.
