Abstract

With growing concern for greenhouse gas emissions impact on climate change, there is a clear value in minimizing reliance on greenhouse gas emitting fossil fuels. A higher penetration of fluctuating renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, are growing in capacity. Maintaining reliable energy accessibility to the grid requires a stable source of power. Nuclear power plants provide emissions free reliable energy to the grid. To best reduce reliance on fossil fuels, nuclear hybrid energy systems (NHES) focus on tightly coupling renewable generation with a nuclear power plant (NPP) on an industrial park to ensure reliable energy generation to the grid as well as profitability of the system as a whole. The industrial park is comprised of the NPP, the renewable, and some form of industrial process that consumes the energy not used by the grid. For this research, we analyze the computational modeling approaches currently being pursued for NHES.
