AESS 2017 Draft Conference Session Schedule

New Frontiers in Visualizing Climate Change

Friday, June 23, 2017 at 1:30 PM–3:00 PM MDT
ENR2 S 230
Abstract

While there is overwhelming scientific agreement on human-caused climate change, both the impacts of climate change and its causal links to human behavior are often difficult for the general public to see. Much of the current climate change imagery is remote (e.g., polar bears) or abstract (e.g., graphs and models) and actual use of fossil fuels is often invisible, untouchable, and difficult to track (e.g., we use things that use energy).

However, a host of new and emerging technologies are enabling improved visualization of climate change impacts, and linking causes and solutions to those impacts. Technologies such as smart meters, dynamic flood models, and virtual reality have the potential to improve the ways that climate change is communicated to audiences. This session will bring together leading scholars who are designing and testing these new technologies to discuss their role in engaging the public, building awareness, and accelerating action for climate mitigation and adaptation.

This session has direct implications for the conference theme of Environment, Wellness, and Community in that presenters will discuss tools and strategies that scientists and advocates can leverage to communicate climate science to local and global communities. Presenters will address the potential of these new technologies as well as empirical research on how and for whom they may be most effective.
