2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

How Barriers Become Opportunites: Retaining Student-Veterans at the Community College

Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 4:30 PM–5:45 PM EST
Roundtables
Type of Presentation

Roundtable Discussion (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

This investigation examines the experiences of student-veterans attending a community college. Barrier-busting strategies and tips for transformation will be discussed.

Target Audience

College faculty, disability services coordinators, Adult Education specialists, veteran support and student services personnel, curriculum development members, and community college staff

Learning Outcomes

Session participants will be able to predict the potential institutional, situational, and dispositional barriers of student-veterans attending public colleges and identify strategies to ameliorate the impact. Participants will also gain an understanding of which learning theories are able to account for these obstacles and opportunities for increasing student-veteran retention.

Session Description

More than 500,000 undergradute students are veterans on college campuses, in part due to the scaling down of both Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedon (OEF). Many have entered into the adult learning community following a disorienting dilemma and have found that there is a significant discrepancy between their goals and present levels of performance; their motivation is at its peak and barriers can be overwhelming. We are at a critical tipping point with this population of students and must make every effort to highlight and promote the student services that are free and available to help enhance their development.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
