It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. Give Me a “Real World” Example: Metacognition, Comprehension, and Critical Literacy with Adults.

Session Abstract
This session will review the theoretical framework/rational, assessments, and curriculum utilized in creating a critical literacy program for adults in a program within a higher education institution.
Target Audience
This who would likely benefit from attendance in the session include: Literacy Program Administrators, Literacy Program Practitioners/Teachers, Adult Basic Education Administrators and Instructors, Postsecondary Student Service/Learning Program Administrators and Service Providers.
Learning Outcomes
Learners will be able to:
- Understand the theoretical/research rationale for implementing crtical literacy curriculum within a postsecondary reading program.
- Understand the need for differentiation of curriculum and instruction for those included in a postsecondary reading program
- Understand how norm and criterion referenced assessments are used to track progress within the curriculum
Session Description
With a 21st century information economy, critical literacy skills (comprehending, evaluating, and synthesizing text) are a requirement for all adults. This presentation will outline how one adult education program within higher education assesses, instructs, and reinforces critical literacy skills. These skills, when taught systematically and purposefully, can significantly impact metacognition and comprehension for adult burgeoning and advanced readers. Assessment of critical literacy skills will also be addressed. Given time, participants will be provided guided practice opportunities in instructional skills and assessment techniques.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
