2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

When Learners Don't Want to Be Adults

Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 10:15 AM–11:00 AM EST
Roundtables
Type of Presentation

Roundtable Discussion (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

We should incorporate best practices from adult education into professional development. However, adult learners don't always want to be adults, so how do we adapt?

Target Audience

Those who work with adults in professional development settings, especially in areas where PD is required so participants may not be self-motivated.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will have strategies to address unmotivated learners, some of which will be aimed at the participant in PD activities but some of which will help PD developers with their own frustration.

Session Description

Many fields require professional development or CEU hours, which can result in learners who are only participating in the PD activity for the credit, rather than with any motivation to learn. They sometimes then prefer a talking head to being an engaged, active learner. Or, participants may take the principle of relevance to the extreme, tuning out any discussion of larger issues or context in favor of resources and activities that they can use immediately with no thought required. The roundtable discussion will give participants an opportunity to vent about these challenges and share ideas for overcoming pushback when using adult learning principles.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
