Long-term Survivors' Incorporation of HIV/AIDS Identity into the Self: What Now?

Session Abstract
Now that HIV/AIDS is considered a chronic illness in the United States, how do gay male long-term survivors (20+ years) continue to integrate HIV/AIDS identity into their lives?
Target Audience
The target audience for this roundtable includes people living with HIV/AIDS or other chronic health conditions, medical professional or other service providers for individuals living with HIV/AIDS or other chronic health conditions, and researchers or educators interested in HIV/AIDS or other chronic medical conditions. No medical knowledge or training is necessary, but an interest in maintaining good health across the adult life span is encouraged.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to explain how HIV infection has evolved from a death sentence to a chronic condition.
Participants will be able to describe how the stages of incorporation of HIV/AIDS identity into the self has evolved since HIV medication options have improved.
Participants will be able to explain how the incorporation of HIV/AIDS identity into the self has continued in long-term survivors (20+ years).
Participants will be able to discuss how this incorporation of HIV/AIDS identity into the self might be expanded to other people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes.
Session Description
This session will present qualitative research with long-term survivors living wiht HIV regarding their path through Baumgartner's four-stage incorporation of HIV/AIDS identity into the self. These stages are diagnosis, a post-diagnosis turning point, immersion into the HIV/AIDS community, and integration. Because these individuals are long-term survivors (20+ years), they passed through the four stages initially identified by Baumgartner. In a later study, Baumgartner found that people who were diagnosed after the development of Protease Inhibitors sometimes experienced only three stages: diagnosis, a post-diagnosis turning point, and integration with no immersion in the HIV/AIDS community. That was not the experience of the long-term survivors in this study. This research investigated whether these long-term survivors have continued their involvement with the HIV/AIDS community. It also investigated their adherance with suggested medical regimens in order to maintain quality of life. The impact of these findings could inform people living with other chronic conditions.
