Making Space for the Next Generation: Incorporating Young Adults into Communities of Faith

Session Abstract
The life of any organization is tied to its ability to incorporate the next generation. This discussion will focus on how various religious groups connect with and educate young adults.
Target Audience
Adult educators interested in religious education will find this discussion of non-formal education and young adult development helpful and applicable to their own work. Students and practitioners with interest in spiritual development, adult development, religious education, and communities of practice should also gain from the discussion.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will learn about the current state of various religious organizations and their success with connecting with the next generation, approaches to incorporating young adults into religious communities, various approaches to non-formal education in religious settings. Special emphasis will be given to applying theory to practice.
Session Description
The life of any organization is tied directly to its ability to incorporate the next generation of young adults into the life and practices of the community. Current research shows that religious organizations are struggling to find ways to connect to the next generation of young adults. In this session, participants will look at spiritual development through young adulthood and the practices of various religious groups to connect with and mentor/educate young adults. Approaches of a variety of faith traditions will be included in the presentation. Emphasis will be given to creative approaches.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
