Keeping all the Balls in the Air: Building Competency-Based Courses for Adult Students

Session Abstract

Developing competency-based courses for adults requires focus on multiple facets. This workshop focuses on one such model and how the developers/designers keep all the proverbial balls in the air.

Target Audience

The workshop is ideal for instructional designers, course developers, adult educators using nontraditional instructional modalities, and others who are interested in competency-based education (CBE).

Learning Outcomes

Those attending the workshop will:
• identify similarities between CBE and traditional course development;
• identify differences between CBE and traditional course development;
• construct 3+ competencies for a given course subject;
• construct 2+ objectives per competency for the course;
• define what learning resources would be appropriate for the course;
• construct 2-3 assessment criteria for the given course; and
• report information on CBE course development process.

Session Description

Contemporary education is no longer limited to the confines of traditional education. Adult learners seek alternative modalities to better themselves for life and work. This is exemplified through nontraditional learners’ increased enrollments in higher education. Growing enrollments joined with impacts of globalization, technology, andragogy, life demands, and work dynamics demand that educators address modern education challenges with alternative instructional modalities. In doing so, institutions will better align instruction with adult learning needs, lifestyle, and professional demands.

One learning alternative is CBE. The format is not new and has been successfully used in training, career colleges, and specialized institutions. More recently several higher education institutions are utilizing CBE models. Institutions are better able to meet measurable requirements of accreditors and governmental agencies.

This workshop will lead participants through a process of developing a competency-based course. Participants will leave with an understanding of the dynamics of CBE.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
