2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Advancing Innovation in Higher Education: Models of Change and Leadership

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 9:15 AM–10:00 AM EST
Woodford
Type of Presentation

Workshop (60-75 minutes)

Session Abstract

This session will examine the forces driving innovation in higher education, models of change utilized in various institutions, and leadership skills proving effective in advancing transformation.

Target Audience

This session is designed for administrators, faculty, and students keenly interested in the future of higher education. In particular, participants from institutions that are undergoing change will find the models of change useful in assessing their own change strategy. With well over half of all change initiatives falling short of intended results, a review of key elements of leadership that have been shown to support higher educational change efforts will also prove valuable to those invested in shaping the future.

Learning Outcomes

• Identify the forces converging on higher education today that are calling for change.
• Describe several ways higher education is innovating to meet emerging global demand.
• Articulate several key change paradigms and their application to higher education.
• List dynamic capabilities supporting capacity to change.
• Identify leadership skills that are associated with effective change implementation in higher education.

Session Description

Higher education is evolving to meet the growing demands of our global knowledge economy. Innovation stimulated by increasingly sophisticated technology, learning platforms, and competency-based offerings are moving higher education into a state of fundamental transformation. This session will give participants a greater understanding of change across the academy and at the institutional level. By examining specific changes made at colleges and universities over the past decade, and by identifying types of change models in use; the session will uncover the dynamic capabilities supporting effective change. Key leadership skills that guide innovative initiatives in higher education will conclude this session.
