Globalization of Curricula through Partnerships: Building Competitive Global Learners

Session Abstract
Explore four innovative, partnership-based international degree models that address the needs of underrepresented adult learners and prepare learners to be competitive in a global market.
Target Audience
This session is intended for faculty, staff and administrators whose desire it is to serve underrepresented populations and/or to augment international programming for adult students as a means to prepare students to be competitive in a global market. Participants with interest in exploring the need for innovative programming to address the unmet educational needs of adult learners in higher education will benefit from learning about how development of partnerships with international educational organizations and universities allows adult learners to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to lead productive and satisfying lives beyond the classroom.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this session, participants will have a greater understanding of how to develop internationally based partnership programs using innovative, accelerated models. Participants will also become versed in why it is critical to address the needs of underrepresented adult learners and prepare them for competition in the global market through such international programming. Lessons in developing and maneuvering partnerships will be addressed and participants will be provided resources for the development of similar programs at their institutions.
Session Description
Serving underrepresented populations is critical in today’s economic environment to meet workforce demand as well as to meet Obama’s 2020 goal for degree completion of adults. Hispanics now number over 50 million in the U.S., a growth of 43% since 2000. We must provide educational resources for this fast growing population, amongst other global populations. In addition to serving the Hispanic population, it is of vital importance to prepare all learners to be competitive in today’s global market. Regis University, a Jesuit Catholic institution serving 10,000 adult learners through degree completion programs in Denver, Colorado is doing just that via a multiplicity of global programs. This session will highlight four such internationally focused partnership programs offered in accelerated formats that serve adults working with and from populations from Latin America, Ireland, the Middle East and Africa. The impact of these programs cannot be overstated in today’s world economy and marketplace.
