2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Student E-ffairs: Serving Students Online

Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 9:00 AM–9:45 AM EST
Franklin
Type of Presentation

Concurrent Session (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

Online adult students' needs will be addressed and current practices examined, in order to advance student support and services in the future.

Target Audience

The target audience for this session would be higher education administrators and personnel, and adult students and educators. The purpose of the program is to increase awareness of the need to support and serve the growing student body online, and to provide information on how to better serve online adult students in the future.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
Discuss the importance of implementing student services online in order to address the needs of on-campus and off-campus adult students.
Adapt their current student affairs model to integrate the needs of the growing online student population.
Advocate for and support online students as student affairs administrators continue to work to meet their needs and demands.

Session Description

This concurrent session is important to adult learners and educators because more and more adults are enrolling in online programs. The rate of growth of online enrollments continues to outpace the rate of growth for the total student population (Allen & Seaman, 2011). The majority of online learners are adult women between the ages of 25 and 45 (Noel-Levitz, 2012). Online courses are often the most convenient, and sometimes only option for adults that wish to earn a college degree. Many colleges and universities have services in place to support their on-campus students, but have been slow to provide the same level of support to online students (Shea & Armitage, 2003). In order to meet the needs and demands of this growing student population, university administrators and personnel must adapt and expand the services they offer to be more supportive for the online learner.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
