2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Adjunct Faculty Development in an Online Adult Degree Completion Program

Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 10:15 AM–11:00 AM EST
Franklin
Type of Presentation

Concurrent Session (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

This presentation discusses the unique needs and challenges of developing and assessing an adjunct faculty development program in the online adult degree completion program at Colorado Christian University.

Target Audience

This session is suitable for administrators and faculty members who are interested in developing the skills of their online adjunct faculty through the use of technology and a mentoring program.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn about and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of an online mentoring program as well as a conversation about the mentor's role in communicating the university's mission/vision. They will see a demonstration of the technology that is being used to support the training and development of online adjunct faculty. Research will be presented on the conflict adjunct faculty members face when their desire to support a student is in conflict with the university’s policies and how the university is working to minimize that conflict.

Session Description

As the presence of online adjunct faculty increases in adult education, so do the challenges of encouraging them to connect to the mission and vision of the university. Helping an instructor navigate the stress of student conflicts, understand policy and procedure, and manage the learning environment from three (or more) time zones away can be time-consuming and difficult. Developing a mentoring program using master teachers in conjunction with relatively inexpensive technology has increased the effectiveness of our adjunct faculty. Moving to a mentoring model has allowed us to redistribute resources and provide additional opportunities to reward and honor adjunct faculty who have taught for us for years with great success. We will be discussing the question/challenge we still face in assessing the program—how do you measure its effectiveness?

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
