Session Abstract

This session explores the learning pods approach, which combines social presence, online engagement, and geographically-oriented teams to meet the needs of adult learners in interdisciplinary hybrid and online programs.

Target Audience

The target audience of this session is anyone with an interest in hybrid and online adult education - faculty, program planners, administrators, and faculty developers. The discussion will include methods and strategies from the field adult education in conjunction with best-practices for online delivery. Learning pods, geographically-oriented teams, can be utilized in order to meet the social, emotional, and academic learning needs of adult graduate students. The authors will also discuss social and affective dimensions learning and how these relate to retention in online environments.

Learning Outcomes

This roundtable will include multiple perspectives on suggestions for success of hybrid and online learning in adult education so that faculty, program planners, administrators, and faculty developers can make informed decisions about whether or not and/or how to include blended approaches of learning as a planned learning opportunity for courses and curricula. They will further be able to explore the intervention approaches to boast retention and completion rates equal to their face to face counter parts.

Session Description

Online classes are gaining popularity across the United States but not without some concern. Retention rates and completion rates for students enrolled in online programs have recently shown negative correlations. Although online classes have been common for quite some time now, there remains a debate regarding the quality of courses delivered online. In this roundtable, the presenters will focus on groups of adult graduate students in regards to interdisciplinary approaches and online education. Apart of this study also focuses on the strategies and tools for practice for retaining and engaging students as well as addressing their social, emotional, and scholarly needs. Suggestions for implementation and future research will also be provided.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
