When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Principles, Practices and Current Context of Adult Higher Education: Underlying Ideas in a Changing Field Part 1

Session Abstract

We will examine some principles and practices of adult education including seminal theories and current articulations, in relation to our current context, including, e.g., MOOCs and for-profit institutions. This is an extended session from 1:30 - 3:30 on Wednesday combining sessions 3 & 4.

Target Audience

Faculty, administrators and graduate students in adult higher education programs.

Learning Outcomes

reminder and/or increased knowledge of underlying principles, key theorists in adult education
reminder and/or increased knowledge of relationship of these principles to pedagogical models
understanding of varying perspectives on and issues raised by these principles and practices
awareness of varying goals and priorities in adult higher education
identification of facets of changing context and their implications for adult higher ecuation, including:
- open education resources such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS), developed by universities and by organizations such as
Coursera, EdX, Udacity
- the expansion of adult education into both traditional and for profit higher education institutions

Session Description

In part I of this extended AHEA session, we will look together at some of the principles and practices of adult education, including both seminal theorists and current articulations, in order to increase understanding of varying perspectives on and issues raised by these ideas and approaches. In Part 2 of the session we will examine the relationships of these principles and practices to several facets of our current context, including:
- adult education and open education resources such as MOOCs;
- the expansion of adult education into both traditional and for profit institutions of higher education.
In a time of rapid change, it is essential that we be thoughtful and intentional about our purposes and priorities, examine current concrete developments in adult higher education in relation to these, and think together about the pedagogies most adequate to and best suited to our adult students and their needs.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
