Finding a home without walls: In the absence of physical space, how can students feel included in interdisciplinary programs?

Type of Session

Mealtime Roundtable

Abstract

Most interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and Sciences programs at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) are based on volunteer contributions from faculty across multiple disciplines with no departmental dedication of physical space.  This structure leaves the program’s students “homeless” and without the daily interactions among student and faculty participants that promotes comradery, community, and inclusion.  The proposed roundtable discussion will be focused on methods, techniques, and platforms for promoting inclusion and the feeling of belonging within an interdisciplinary learning community.  This discussion is directly related to the vision of the AESS conference focused on “Inclusion and Legitimacy” and of interest to the AESS community as many members face similar challenges of inclusion within their wall-less interdisciplinary program.
