2013 Annual Conference

del 5 al 8 de November del 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Jessamine
Type of Presentation

Workshop (60-75 minutes)

Session Abstract

How do adult learning theories align with adult experiences of their General Education programs? Adult-learning enthusiasts will explore how general education challenges our understanding of adult learning needs.

Target Audience

Deans, academic administrators, program directors and faculty of adult education programs, and any adult students who want to love what they are required to learn.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will
• Synthesize shared knowledge of adult learning theory
• Compare known models for general education
• Analyze adult learning theory in light of adult learner experiences with general education requirements
• Analyze general education models and learner experiences with general education in light of adult learning theory
• Propose models for adult-focused general education requirements

Session Description

Adult-focused baccalaureate programs have long adapted existing general education programs to adult learning needs. However, while questions regarding general education purpose, content and outcomes have long been of interest in higher education discussions, these questions have not as frequently been considered in light of adult learning needs and the adult-focused baccalaureate experience.

This session will allow adult education professionals, as well as adult learners, to engage with the issues of the general education experience from an adult learner’s perspective, and to test the theories of adult learning in play with the theories of what it means to be broadly and deeply educated beyond professional preparation. The experience and knowledge of each participant will be engaged to ensure a highly enriched discussion.
