Abstract

Research in political science and sociology has empirically identified an organized movement organized against global environmentalism. This makes the program a counter-movement to the global environmentalism movement which includes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. This panel will bring relevant scholars who research this issue to comment on what we know about the effort to cast doubt on climate science, as well as present new research that extends our understanding of the anti-science program that includes the sitting President of the United States. This is directly relevant to the conference theme of legitimacy and the integrity of evidence-based environmental policy-making, as well as the legitimacy of claims-making in democratic discourse. The success of the climate change counter-movement is an incredibly important issue not only for environmental studies, but to the strength of the republic and the future of international affairs.
