Exploring Social Vulnerability and Community Flood Resilience through Applied Research
Type of Session
Individual Paper Presentation
Abstract
Many communities are facing increased flood frequencies linked to climate change. Under this new normal, "How might communities build resilience to better equip themselves to "bounce back" after flooding events?" becomes a vital and pressing question. However, research and experience also demonstrates that there are those within our communities that may be more socially vulnerable and thus less resilient to flooding events. During this presentation, we will present collaborative, interdisciplinary work that explores social vulnerability and community flood resilience in Iowa, particularly within the Upper Iowa River watershed. We will begin by providing an overview of the project, including the structure of the collaboration and guiding goals. We will also highlight questions and lessons learned - logistical, substantive, and conceptual - in the course of this community-based applied research project. Finally, we will present emerging themes from interviews with homeowners and local officials, focused particularly around the frame of social vulnerability, adaptation, and addressing barriers to flood resilience. Ultimately, we will explore future directions and possible interventions for enhancing flood resilience in our community.
