Abstract

This panel will present research on the challenges of solving environmental problems in a watershed that shares diverse urban and suburban municipalities. Focusing mainly on sections of the Bronx River Watershed and the Hudson River Watershed in NY, we draw on an interview-based research project (conducted in 2017) that explores municipal concerns, priorities, and challenges related to regional environmental management. We focus broadly on barriers and incentives to defining and collaboratively working to solve problems posed by flooding, climate change, and development. We use a political ecology framework to further discuss the uneven costs and benefits of environmental challenges that transcend political borders. Each participant will present a different aspect of the project and the session chair will provide an introduction and moderate a discussion.
