2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Turning Classroom Activities into Keys to Promotion: Creating Work Samples That Count

Type of Presentation

Session Abstract

Every future or current employee will be asked to show a sample of their work. What role can your classroom play in setting them up for success?

Target Audience

This session is appropriate for all attendees who work with adult students in a classroom setting, develop curriculum, or work with industry partners.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Identify viable work samples from classroom projects, models, assignments, and discussion.
• Link knowledge, skills and abilities gained in the classroom to industry performance measures.
• Help adult learners make the connection between classroom and “real world.”

Session Description

Adult learners sitting in a classroom are wired to think like employees. What do I do to make my next promotion? How will this increase my salary? What am I learning now that I can take back to my job and use right now? Is this information going to help me get gainful employment?

In this session we’ll take a look at ways to turn classroom projects, activities, models, and discussions into viable work samples that show proof of the learner’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Whether your goal is basic comprehension of an idea or problem solving that demonstrates leadership ability, you’ll see how to create situations that link to industry expectations. When you can help adult learners make the connection between the classroom and the workplace, you’ll up your participation, experience higher student commitment to your classes, and increased overall student performance.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
