Abstract

The millennial generation recognizes the global existential crises in climate change and global pollution. The expectations and attitudes of this generation differ markedly from those of their elders, especially the current policy makers in institutions and government. This panel will pull together perspectives from researchers at Imperative Group focused on the purpose driven life, and from current graduate students planning their careers in sustainability disciplines. The discussion will be set in a framework based on the premise that the solutions to the existential crises of the 21st century are based on ethics and values determinations rather than on technology advances alone. The panel discussion will focus on how engagement with purpose can achieve effective and creative solutions.Research from citizen science in an urban setting and from habitat development joined with agriculture provide real world exqmples of community engagement as part of a sustainability research protocol.  Illustrating the practice of purpose-driven initiatives through the current work of emerging leaders gives evidence to research findings of the Imperative Group on the expectations and aspirations of young people driving a purpose-driven economy.
