This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. It's Complicated and It's Worth It! Successful Collaboration Facilitates Baccalaureate Education for Diverse RN Workforce

Session Abstract

Faculty champions share a successful collaboration’s development including forming and storming. Engagement strategies targeting non- academic college departments are articulated. Attendees’ contributions and critiques are valued

Target Audience

This session is helpful to academic as well as community partnerships. University and Community College personnel including administration, admissions, faculty, registrar, legal counsel, marketing, and academic advising will find this information valuable. The successes and misunderstandings as well as strategies used to engage the non-academic departments are highlighted. These strategies can be applied in community partnerships. Accrediting organizations as well as stakeholders external to the academy will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of a collaborative initiative. Faculty/staff involved in research collaborations may discover strategies to propel the individual contribution to the level of an organizational partnership.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session, participants will be able to
1. Describe three commonalities of the two colleges that supported the formation of the partnership.
2. Name one successful partnership in your present organization which has a faculty/staff champion.
3. Differentiate the activities and outcomes of the forming and storming stages of a collaboration.
4. Explain two strategies used in this collaboration to engage non-nursing departments in each college.
5. Provide one example of a critical contribution provided by a faculty/staff who was not part of the Collaboration Committee.

Session Description

Essential components of academic collaborations:
Background information on each college emphasizes the commonalities that support the partnership. Organizational concepts of forming and storming describe the early stages of the process. The forming stage facilitates relationship development and trust which sustains the work group. Through goal clarification and conflict-resolution, a shared vision with clearly defined goals and open communication emerge. Requirements such as Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and/or consultation with accrediting organizations may formalize the Collaboration. These activities often require inclusion of non-academic departments of both colleges. Non-committee members provide essential contributions to the overall success.
Two factors in healthcare heighten the urgency of the collaboration's goal. First, health care has become highly complex requiring expertise in technology and the healing art of caring which typically requires baccalaureate preparation. Secondly, as the USA population becomes ethnically and racially more diverse, the nursing profession must reflect this same diversity.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
