2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

Essentials of effective mentoring experiences and how they contribute to lifelong career development are explored from protege and mentor perspectives in both business and higher education contexts.

Target Audience

The target audience for this session is any person who is a mentor, intends to be a mentor, or may develop mentoring programs within business or higher education contexts. Individuals who will find this session useful include organizational leaders, human resource development professionals, professors, higher education administrators, and students focused on career development within either the business or higher education contexts.

Learning Outcomes

After participating in the session, participants will be equipped to:
--Detail and analyze the essentials of effective mentoring experiences and how they contribute to lifelong career development.
--Examine protege needs through various perspectives including gender and generation.
--Investigate commonly held perceptions about effective mentoring experiences based on recent research and participants' experiences.

Session Description

The value of mentoring to protege success is well-documented; consequently, the desire to better understand the essentials of effective mentoring experiences continues to fuel research in the realms of business and higher education. In this session, recent research regarding mentoring experiences and the value of those experiences to lifelong career development in both business and higher educational contexts will be shared. Perceptions of one-time proteges, who have the advantage of analyzing their mentoring experiences across time and through the lens of lifelong career development, will be explored. Participants will be encouraged to connect their experiences as proteges and as mentors to key research findings and discuss their personal insights regarding the challenges and strategies needed to customize mentoring actions for each unique protege, build trust within the mentoring experience, and provide growth opportunities for the protege.
