Bridging the Divide: Challenges and Opportunities for Adult Learning Practitioners Working in Healthcare Education Settings

Session Abstract

Demands for accountability in healthcare education have led to the involvement of adult learning practitioners in curriculum reform, with challenges and opportunities for bridging these two worlds of practice.

Target Audience

All adult educators interested in the current changes taking place in healthcare education, including students, faculty, and administrators in adult education, as well as those in medical, nursing, dental, pharmaceutical, and allied health disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, session participants will have:
Examined the challenges and opportunities for bridging different worlds of practice for adult educators who want to be involved in curricula reform efforts that are currently changing how healthcare professionals are taught;
Discussed traditional adult learning concepts of critical thinking, self-efficacy, transfer of learning, and the value of reflection in the context of healthcare education;
Explored opportunities for creating learning outcomes valued by both worlds of practice and the means to achieve them.

Session Description

The mandate for healthcare education reform has grown exponentially in recent years with a steady drumbeat from accrediting organizations, funding agencies, institutional leaders, and students as well as educators in healthcare fields. Public demands for accountability, safety, and cost efficiency are driving changes with a call for competency-based education and learners who are adept in critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. However, altering traditional practices in healthcare education and the values associated with them that have been in place for over 100 years has been far from easy. Many in the healthcare field have turned to adult learning scholars and practitioners for help in redesigning outdated curricula that have traditionally depended upon didactic lectures and memorization of a vast body of scientific knowledge. In this session, we explore the challenges and opportunities associated with our various roles as practitioners in attempting to build bridges between healthcare education and adult learning practices.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
