2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

This session will highlight how beginning medical students are taught using adult education principles to promote their effectiveness in working with adult patients.

Target Audience

This is a professional development session for those working in medical education or areas of healthcare education. The session will be useful to all levels of medical practioners and to those who train medical practioners.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will gain knowledge about specific adult education principles advocated by Paulo Freire and Jane Vella and how to apply those principles in training medical practioners. They will learn Vella's twelve principles for effective adult learning and Freire's concept of "praxis" and their application in medical education. They will specifically learn and use five specific listening and dialogue skills within the context of these adult education principles to help medical practitioners perform better with patients.

Session Description

This is an important area of interest to adult educators and medical educators because it illustrates the importance of using adult education principles, particularly those dealing with listening and dialogue as advocated by Paulo Freire and Jane Vella, in training medical practitioners. A problem in medicine is non-complience and getting patients to comply with medical advice. Medical schools are interested in helping medical students better relate to patients and better communicate with patients in the identification and treatment of illness. This session will cover the adult education principles advocated by Freire and Vella and describe and illustrated how they are used in an actual medical school training program. The program will be described and the principles will be demonstrated during the session.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
