Session Description

Government approvals, scholarships lists, and where to actually go - tend to be the key questions around travelling in the MENA region. Beyond Admissions: Why Transitions Programs Matter in the College Admissions Process

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
UCC 41
Session Description

The university admissions process and transition to university life can be an exciting and hopeful time for students, but it can also come with many stressors that can impact student well-being, success, and even retention at university. What are ways that schools can provide transitional support for students in tandem with supporting them through the university application process? What kinds of support and skills do students need before leaving for university to set themselves up for success? What can universities do to diversify the information available to prospective students, beyond academic programme information to also include information on the transition and support they will be able to receive once at university? In this session we will share data from schools, universities, parents, and students on the gaps they see in student support through this transitional process, the importance of student well-being and belonging on success, and the importance each audience places on different skills needed for a successful university transition. Join us for a discussion of effective practices and new ideas that both schools and universities can implement to improve student well-being and success during the admissions and transition process.

Building Purpose, Not Profile: Encouraging Students to Live Their Best Life

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 3:00 PM–4:15 PM EDT
SH 3345
Session Description

With the world around us constantly changing, we’re seeing new information about career development coming out of the World Economics Forum and new UN Sustainable Development goals – how does this change the way we guide students in their path towards higher education and postgraduate life? Increased selectivity and perceived heightened competition are pressuring students and their families to fit a certain mold rather than pursue their authentic interests and intrinsic motivations perpetuating not only a dangerous mental crisis but also false information about university admissions and career advice. How can we as counseling and admissions professionals come together to shift this paradigm and return the narrative back to messaging rooted in authenticity? Join us for a discussion on how we can reshape the way students share their stories in their applications to reflect genuine representation and to focus on personal development over personal gain.

How to Master New Study Destinations - A "Study in Prague" Case Study

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 3:00 PM–4:15 PM EDT
UCC 146
Session Description

New study destinations are springing up around the world. While diversity of choice is essential and this is an exciting time for finding the perfect fit for every student, it presents a huge challenge to overworked counselors trying to master the nuances, hurdles, and pros and cons of each location. After decades of focus on “mainstream” destinations, perhaps the biggest challenge is just knowing what questions to ask!
We offer Prague as an instructive case study. The Study in Prague Consortium comprises the seven public universities in Prague, Czech Republic, which together offer more than 50 undergraduate and 100s of graduate programs taught in English in a safe, clean, and beautiful city with excellent employment opportunities. However, these programs are not a good fit for all students, and this session will provide clear guidelines for finding the students who are ready for their “Czech Dream” while also unpacking how different the timelines, application process, and academic cultures can be from the US-UK model.

School Profiles & Transcripts: What's Important

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 3:00 PM–4:15 PM EDT
SEB 2200
Session Description

The school profile and the transcript are essential documents that go along with the student's application. These documents represent the school and give context to the student's performance throughout high school. It is important for school counselors to think about the accuracy of each document and the information that would be supportive of students' applications and useful to colleges and universities as they consider each candidate's application. In this session, we will review the critical components of each and provide suggestions for collaborating with school officials to enhance understanding and produce good profiles and transcripts that highlight the strengths of the school and the applicant.

When the Correct Answer Is No

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 3:00 PM–4:15 PM EDT
SEB 1059
Session Description

Ignorance is bliss until it comes knocking on your door with confidence.

Applying to university is a complex process, often one that involves a whole family, but for some, this includes multiple applications, various platforms, different deadlines, testing and many essays. We know that many families don’t truly know what it involves until they are lost in the sea of essays, by which point, their well-being has been compromised, and the damage will take much longer to heal than the time it took to create.

Good guidance brings in the factor of well-being, whether it's in our job description or not. That can mean saying no to students, parents, applicants and even senior leadership.

When is it in the best interests of a student to tell them "no?" Is that different when working as a counsellor, an admissions officer, an IEC or a school leader? How best can we frame a "no" to make it a positive outcome?

This session will give you the backing and examples of why no can be the right and only answer.

Approaches to Need-Based Financial Aid

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 4:30 PM–5:45 PM EDT
SEB 1200
Session Description

For international students, financing higher education in the United States can be a daunting and confusing process. One way colleges and universities approach financial aid is through offering need-based financial aid awards. Each institution approaches these awards in different ways, depending on a multitude of factors. Swarthmore College is need-aware in the admissions process for international students, but does not request financial information until after admission. Denison University is also need-aware, but collects financial information during the application process. Bowdoin College recently went need-blind for international students. This session is intended for admissions professionals to learn about the pros and cons of different approaches to need-based financial aid and admissions.

11-12-13 Year Systems: Are They Admissible? Should We Grant Credit?

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
UCC 41
Session Description

Do students from education systems of varying lengths (11, 12, and 13 years) have equal access to post-secondary study? Does the country where they completed their secondary studies determine admissibility and/or advanced standing? Do institutions determine admissibility and/or award credit based on the number of years completed? Do other factors influence these decisions? This session will explore 11-, 12- and 13-year education systems to determine when students from these systems are admissible to undergraduate (post-secondary) studies, how stereotypes and bias may impact decisions, and when credit may be granted for secondary studies. This session will include research related to admission and advanced credit policies in various countries with representatives from different countries sharing their institutional perspectives. Best-Fit Career: How High Schools & Higher Ed Institutions Are Helping Students Find Their Way

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
SH 3345
Session Description

The escalating costs of higher education are driving students to seek certainty that their educational paths will lead to fulfilling careers and a strong return on investment. Career exploration plays a crucial role in this, enabling students to uncover and consider career paths previously unthought of, connect the dots between skills learned in school and how they apply in the real world, and while also providing them with direct exposure to the professional world. This process is essential for helping students make educated choices that not only cater to their passions but also contribute to their long-term financial security.

In this session, counsellors, admissions officers, and Unifrog will share structures and resources that they utilize to help students explore, identify, and gain experience in careers of interest: Counsellors will share a comprehensive, intentional careers curriculum and an example of an after-school careers club that provides opportunities for students to gain leadership experience, acquire communication, organizational, and marketing skills while contributing to their school community. Unifrog will present resources that they provide to support careers-related standards as they relate to university/college readiness and HE applications. Admissions officers will explain how applicants' careers exploration activities are considered within their application process as well as about the degree-apprenticeships, co-ops, and work-experience options that their institutions offer students.

Computer Science Is the New Engineering

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
SSC 2050
Session Description

For the past two decades, engineering was the most competitive program that students were applying to. And then, a few years ago, a new trend began to emerge. Computer science has now eclipsed engineering. As the number of prospective computer science applicants has risen, secondary school counselors find themselves struggling to find a wider range of programs for students to apply to.
What do counselors need to know about this important major? What is the best curricular preparation for students who want to pursue a career in this field? And how can counselors support these curricular choices and help students find HEI options, regardless of whether the student is towards the top or bottom of the class?

International Academic Qualifications > National Bubble Tests

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
MC 110
Session Description

The future of global higher education enrollment is uncertain, but this positive trend seems likely to persist: universities will continue to prioritize the academic record over non-curricular components, such as legacy tests.

However, there remains a need for quality assurance & external validation of high school coursework to help manage & inform quality admissions decisions and to attract a diverse class. For example, even as some universities now require an ACT or SAT for U.S. domestic students, they waive testing for international students with recognized international academic qualifications, such as Cambridge or IB coursework.

Our panel of global college access leaders will explore, examine, and evaluate ways in which quality curricular-based assessments & related credentials can contribute productively to key enrollment goals in a post-testing world.

Is Profit in Education a Dirty Word? Exploring the Various Types of "For Profit" in International Education

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
TC 141
Session Description

The term "for-profit" encompasses a range of provisions within international education. From a single-person IEC to an owner-operated company to a large, multinational, venture-capital-backed organisation. Are they all the same? Does it matter?

This session will explore the crucial difference between different models of being "commercial" in international education - the difference between being owned by investors, by private equity, by one single owner, or by a foundation.

What do counsellors, school administrators, admissions officers and others need to know about the private organisations they are contacted by? Does it matter if one company's "profits" are, in effect, their staff salaries, while another goes back to a range of institutional investment organisations? How do we navigate this complex world?

As the world of international education becomes increasingly commercialised, we will explore case studies of different models to empower the audience to ask their own questions and make choices that align with their values and the values of their institution.

To Make Money or to Read Kant: Understanding Our Internalized Models of Education & Bridging the Gap

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM EDT
SEB 1059
Session Description

Have you ever wondered why certain debates regarding the validity of rankings and appropriate majors to study persist in the world of higher education?
This session proposes an explanation, namely the competing internalized models of a university education we all implicitly harbor – in short, whether one sees education as transactional or transformational.
University representatives from around the world as well as a high school counselor and a representative from an independent organization will offer their perspectives on the purpose of higher education and facilitate an interactive discussion with the audience to reflect on their own internalized models of education.
The session will weave in practical applications on how to best support your students and bridge competing perspectives, allowing for heightened self-awareness and more fruitful collaboration between diverse stakeholders.

Session Description

When only a handful of colleges have openly explained where and how they use AI in the admission process, and AI pioneers admitting that detection devices can’t catch plagiarism through AI tools, we are in genuinely challenging territory. But are we focusing on the right issues here? Is generative AI just the newest vehicle for plagiarism, and the issues that underpin cheating remain the same? Why do we see a correlation between high levels of cheating with a low sense of belonging and inclusion? Hosting a Regional Institute

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 4:00 PM–5:15 PM EDT
UCC 41
Session Description

Since their inception, International ACAC Regional Institutes have carved out a unique niche in the professional development and networking space. More and more members attend Regional Institutes every year, and they provide an exciting opportunity to engage with colleagues in a smaller, more localized setting, focusing on specific circumstances within each particular region. Regional Institutes are just one way the Association offers high schools and university campuses the opportunity to participate in an impactful educational event as a host institution.

Come discover what it takes to host an upcoming International ACAC Regional Institute. Participants will learn about the benefits and requirements, and how institutions are true partners in the process alongside International ACAC. We will be joined by the International ACAC Regional Institutes Team as well as past International ACAC Regional Institute hosts to answer all of your questions including: cost, logistics, getting your administration on board, and much, much more.

Meeting Students Where They Are: Harnessing Social Media for Good

Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 4:00 PM–5:15 PM EDT
SEB 1200
Session Description

Social media is a key part of how we obtain information in 2024. Everything from current events and news to the latest celebrity gossip is picked over and analyzed on social media. With such a visible role in the news cycle, prospective students also naturally gravitate to their favorite sites for information on the college admissions process. But what awaits them there? Can the information they find be relied upon, or are students being led in the wrong direction? This session will discuss the role social media plays in college admissions - not from the oft-discussed perspective of whether colleges check student accounts, but rather focusing on providing access and correct information, from the perspective of university accounts, individual admission officers, and secondary schools. Participants will be pushed to answer the question: how can we use social media for good?
