Government approvals, scholarships lists, and where to actually go - tend to be the key questions around travelling in the MENA region. Over the years, many have considered adding MENA to their recruitment cycle, but didn't know where to start or simply didn't go about it in the best way to see results. Whether you are looking for local students or all the expats present in the region- we are here to help. From what you actually need for ADEK to how to approach government scholarships (even for small Universities who don't always have the support of their countries), we want to pass along a guide to recruiters that allows them to make this a tailor made trip that suits their needs. The university admissions process and transition to university life can be an exciting and hopeful time for students, but it can also come with many stressors that can impact student well-being, success, and even retention at university. What are ways that schools can provide transitional support for students in tandem with supporting them through the university application process? What kinds of support and skills do students need before leaving for university to set themselves up for success? What can universities do to diversify the information available to prospective students, beyond academic programme information to also include information on the transition and support they will be able to receive once at university? In this session we will share data from schools, universities, parents, and students on the gaps they see in student support through this transitional process, the importance of student well-being and belonging on success, and the importance each audience places on different skills needed for a successful university transition. Join us for a discussion of effective practices and new ideas that both schools and universities can implement to improve student well-being and success during the admissions and transition process.

How to Master New Study Destinations - A "Study in Prague" Case Study

New study destinations are springing up around the world. While diversity of choice is essential and this is an exciting time for finding the perfect fit for every student, it presents a huge challenge to overworked counselors trying to master the nuances, hurdles, and pros and cons of each location. After decades of focus on “mainstream” destinations, perhaps the biggest challenge is just knowing what questions to ask!
We offer Prague as an instructive case study. The Study in Prague Consortium comprises the seven public universities in Prague, Czech Republic, which together offer more than 50 undergraduate and 100s of graduate programs taught in English in a safe, clean, and beautiful city with excellent employment opportunities. However, these programs are not a good fit for all students, and this session will provide clear guidelines for finding the students who are ready for their “Czech Dream” while also unpacking how different the timelines, application process, and academic cultures can be from the US-UK model.

Ignorance is bliss until it comes knocking on your door with confidence.

Applying to university is a complex process, often one that involves a whole family, but for some, this includes multiple applications, various platforms, different deadlines, testing and many essays. We know that many families don’t truly know what it involves until they are lost in the sea of essays, by which point, their well-being has been compromised, and the damage will take much longer to heal than the time it took to create.

Good guidance brings in the factor of well-being, whether it's in our job description or not. That can mean saying no to students, parents, applicants and even senior leadership.

When is it in the best interests of a student to tell them "no?" Is that different when working as a counsellor, an admissions officer, an IEC or a school leader? How best can we frame a "no" to make it a positive outcome?

This session will give you the backing and examples of why no can be the right and only answer.

For international students, financing higher education in the United States can be a daunting and confusing process. One way colleges and universities approach financial aid is through offering need-based financial aid awards. Each institution approaches these awards in different ways, depending on a multitude of factors. Swarthmore College is need-aware in the admissions process for international students, but does not request financial information until after admission. Denison University is also need-aware, but collects financial information during the application process. Bowdoin College recently went need-blind for international students. This session is intended for admissions professionals to learn about the pros and cons of different approaches to need-based financial aid and admissions.

The escalating costs of higher education are driving students to seek certainty that their educational paths will lead to fulfilling careers and a strong return on investment. Career exploration plays a crucial role in this, enabling students to uncover and consider career paths previously unthought of, connect the dots between skills learned in school and how they apply in the real world, and while also providing them with direct exposure to the professional world. This process is essential for helping students make educated choices that not only cater to their passions but also contribute to their long-term financial security.

In this session, counsellors, admissions officers, and Unifrog will share structures and resources that they utilize to help students explore, identify, and gain experience in careers of interest: Counsellors will share a comprehensive, intentional careers curriculum and an example of an after-school careers club that provides opportunities for students to gain leadership experience, acquire communication, organizational, and marketing skills while contributing to their school community. Unifrog will present resources that they provide to support careers-related standards as they relate to university/college readiness and HE applications. The future of global higher education enrollment is uncertain, but this positive trend seems likely to persist: universities will continue to prioritize the academic record over non-curricular components, such as legacy tests.

However, there remains a need for quality assurance & external validation of high school coursework to help manage & inform quality admissions decisions and to attract a diverse class. For example, even as some universities now require an ACT or SAT for U.S. domestic students, they waive testing for international students with recognized international academic qualifications, such as Cambridge or IB coursework.

Is Profit in Education a Dirty Word? Exploring the Various Types of "For Profit" in International Education

Session Description

The term "for-profit" encompasses a range of provisions within international education. From a single-person IEC to an owner-operated company to a large, multinational, venture-capital-backed organisation. Are they all the same? Does it matter?

This session will explore the crucial difference between different models of being "commercial" in international education - the difference between being owned by investors, by private equity, by one single owner, or by a foundation.

What do counsellors, school administrators, admissions officers and others need to know about the private organisations they are contacted by? Does it matter if one company's "profits" are, in effect, their staff salaries, while another goes back to a range of institutional investment organisations? How do we navigate this complex world?

As the world of international education becomes increasingly commercialised, we will explore case studies of different models to empower the audience to ask their own questions and make choices that align with their values and the values of their institution.
