The Make-It/Take-It: How to Weave Trans/GNC-Friendly Text Talks into Social Justice Curriculum

Workshop Description

Learn how to promote and embrace diversity through literature and primary sources (even when your district is in the beginning phases of implementation) that allow Trans/GNC students to accurately see themselves reflected in the curriculum. One veteran teacher discusses methods (including content and pedagogy) for infusing curriculum with Trans/GNC-affirming content into pre-existing curricular frameworks.
Review and practice recognizing useful books that DO have Trans/GNC themes, and useful books that DON’T, but can still be mined for framing Trans/GNC [and all LGBTQIA] inclusion and discussion around broader themes of identity, affirmation, advocacy, and empathy. EVERY book is an opportunity!
Educators will examine texts DURING the workshop session and simulate “text-talks” in thinking-map form that examine broad topics. A great practice opportunity for educators to turn ANY text into a platform for discussion about Trans/GNC experience as well as the confluence of myriad identities.

Presenter Bio

Mick Rabin taught in the classroom for 21 years. He is interested in the confluence of social justice and student empowerment at all levels. His implementation of these practices in the classroom setting is informed by teaching pedagogies that are universal across all stages of human development. His experience working at a Title-1 school with extremely limited resources and under policies of limited scope forced him to get creative. Now a Project Resource Teacher for LGBTQIA Advocacy in San Diego Unified (and through many years with GLSEN San Diego County), Mick has facilitated numerous professional development workshops which explore resourceful ways for promoting identity exploration through a curricular lens.
