English-Spanish Cognate Academic Vocabulary: A Window to Language Learning

Session Abstract
This presentation demonstrates how teaching academic English-Spanish cognate vocabulary to Latino English language learners helps them develop bilingual and bi-literacy skills, and enhance academic achievement across the curriculum. Through cognates, students transfer and transform first language knowledge stored in their memories to the learning of English. Classroom activities are provided.
