Professional Development Opportunities in the Environment for Underrepresented Students
Type of Session
Mealtime Roundtable
Abstract
This discussion will consider how professors and others working at colleges and universities can encourage more students of color, first generation students, and students from low-income to study environmental issues and pursue post-graduate careers in environmental fields. Participants will be asked to share about barriers to entry for these students and how their schools or others have overcome these obstacles. We will consider opportunities for partnership with non-academic organizations, funding, marketing to prospective and current students, and other strategies for pursuing inclusion in our programs and for enhancing opportunities for students in internships and after graduation. I will handout a list of programs for under-represented populations and will ask participants to help me expand this list which can later be shared with AESS members.
