Session Abstract
Rubrics are effective tools for measuring outcomes in community education. Explore how to develop a rubric in this context and what to do with the data generated by its use.

This session has the following learning objectives:
1) Participants will be able to explain the uses of a rubric for the purpose of evaluation.
2) Participants will be able to identify the steps involved in developing a rubric.
3) Participants will be able to employ data analysis techniques on information collected via rubric.
Session Description
Many community education outcomes are difficult to measure, such as relationship building, stakeholder communication, capacity to impact decision-making processes, and ability to address local priorities. Progress toward these outcomes occurs slowly over time, making many common evaluation tools cumbersome and ineffective. This session will introduce the use of rubrics as a tool for measuring the impact of community education processes. A rubric is an evaluative tool used to determine the components of an objective and establish what constitutes acceptable levels of performance. The presentation will describe the collaborative process used to develop a rubric specifically for use in measuring community capacity building efforts related to redevelopment of environmentally-challenged properties. Examples of the pilot use of this rubric in communities will be presented. Guidance on how to use data collected by rubrics will also be provided.
