Workshop Description

Welcoming Schools has a wealth of resources at the disposal of caring elementary schools educators who want to make their classrooms and schools more gender inclusive. In this session, participants will be introduced to Welcoming Schools lessons that help students to understand gender. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to experience one of our lessons firsthand, and will leave knowing how to access Welcoming Schools lesson plans and well as take with you a list of book recommendations to open up discussions on gender roles and gender stereotypes in developmentally appropriate ways.

Marissa Rathbone
Presenter Bio

Marissa Rathbone serves as Director of Operations in the Learning and Teaching Division at Washington’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). She provides support and leadership to strengthen statewide implementation of social studies, world languages, the arts, health, physical education, sexual health, and computer science. Her background is in organizational leadership and health education, with an emphasis on educating the Whole Child.
