2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

Oral histories quilted into individual blocks provide clues of the common leadership styles of Women of Achievement. We share how studies of oral history and quilting intersect to enhance research.

Target Audience

Participants include those interested in arts-based research and also alternative ways to share women's stories and leadership lessons to a broader audience. Communicating through visual arts takes on its own life, as it develops with many partners in the creation process the researchers' observations become focused and illustrate reality graphically. This process has a flow and we are interested in sharing the lessons we learned from our translation from interview to oral history to fiber. Sharing others' journeys into arts-based research is encouraged because as in quilting, nothing is wasted.

Learning Outcomes

This session will provide information about the research project and arts-based component of telling stories from more than 40 women. Outcomes include: 1) a shared research framework and process for developing a visual arts-based research endeavor; 2) lessons from putting together a research and arts team; 3) and shared knowledge about ways to develop and display this work. We seek suggestions and learning from others who have pursued this type of research as well.

Session Description

Arts-based research and visualization of data in ways other than written text is becoming more popular. It serves to reach audiences who may not otherwise be accessible through journals/books/ or traditional means of dissemination. As part of an Oral History Project highlighting "Women of Achievement," we have developed quilt squares to represent part highlights of each woman's story. Through a team of artists/quilters/researchers, we have created a framework and gained experience in pursuing this type of research. In this concurrent session, we will share examples of the work, as well as lessons learned and seek other ideas from the participants as well.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
