Workshop

Abstract

1. Workshop title: Getting Published: Preparing Manuscripts for Journal
                             Submission.

2. Length: Half-day

3. Proposed theme and justification

This will repeat a workshop first held at the Vermont conference and repeated every year since (so this would be our eighth iteration).  The Workshop is intended for graduate students and young professional desiring an opportunity to learn more about journal reviewing, how to prepare articles for publication, and how manuscripts are reviewed after submission by professional journals such as the Journal for Environmental Studies and Sciences.

4. Expected outcomes:

One purpose of the workshop is to identify and encourage prospective submissions to JESS. Additionally, the workshop should help the participants to anticipate issues commonly associated with journal article reviews and to prepare their manuscripts with greater professional skill.

5.  Structure and activities

How the workshop will be organized:

During the first part of the Workshop experienced journal editors and writers will discuss how manuscripts are reviewed, editorial software, issues commonly related to journal reviews, and suggestions for preparing manuscripts. Generous opportunity will be provided for questions from participants.

The second part of the Workshop will involve draft manuscripts which prospective participants are invited to submit in advance of the Workshop.  Manuscripts should be submitted by June 1, 2018.

The manuscripts will be reviewed by the workshop organizers and those submissions in satisfactory preparation will each be read by the workshop organizer and at least two other experienced editors. Manuscripts will be divided so that each reviewer will have no more than two articles to read.

During this session, participants will be divided into small groups, each consisting of 2-4 authors and a Journal editor or otherwise qualified reviewer. Each paper will be read by the other group members in advance of the meeting. Suggestions for revision or improvement will be discussed. Workshop participants who did not submit manuscripts may observe these small group discussions.

The workshop will close with a final collective meeting to discuss issues and ideas from the review sessions.
