Abstract

The use of case studies in environmental classrooms is not new, but there is growing interest in case study pedagogy as evidenced by the recent development of several initiatives related to case study teaching, including the creation of the journal, Case Studies in the Environment. In this session, we will discuss several ways in which case studies can be used to achieve a broad range of course goals. Presenters will highlight examples of how case studies can be used to teach about concepts related to environmental justice, and environmental politics and policies. We will also highlight how cases can be used to achieve general education goals such as enhancing student engagement. Given the great diversity of approaches in case study teaching, we hope to stimulate discussion about the broader promise and limitations of the case study approach for the environmental arena, as well an exchange of best practices and teaching insights.
