2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

This session will present how positive psychology may enhance self-direction in adult students through the lens of the presenters’ Self-Directed Wellness Model.

Target Audience

Professors and instructors in higher education across disciplines interested in any of the following areas should attend: (1) positive psychology, (2) self-directed learning, and (3) practical application of theory to promote student learning and development.

Learning Outcomes

Session attendees will be introduced to implications created by the Self-Directed Wellness Model for the higher education classroom. They will gain an understanding of how to utilize the tenets of positive psychology to analyze their teaching and learning by developing more engaging lessons/activities that attend to students’ emotional needs.

Session Description

Positive psychology, defined as “the study of the conditions and processes that contribute to the flourishing or optimal functioning of people, groups, and institutions” (Gable & Haidt, 2005, p. 104), is a growing field that holds considerable promise for adult education. While there have been calls for further exploration of the overlaps between the two fields (Anderson & Brockett, 2007), little focus has been aimed at classroom practice. This session will focus on the Self-Directed Learning Wellness Model, which was developed by the presenters to better understand the relationship between positive psychology and self-directed learning. Through this session, practitioners will become aware of the benefits of promoting self-directed wellness.

Anderson, M. N. & Brockett, R. G. (2007). Is there a place at the adult education table for positive psychology? Theorizing from the literature. Presented at the 49th Annual Adult Education Research Conference, St. Louis, MO.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
