2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

This session follows two Extension education workshops for farmers. Evaluation data indicate participants gain considerable self-confidence, and develop enhanced skills because of their active involvement in these workshops.

Target Audience

Non-formal adult educators may gain insight into their own practice from participating in this session. While this session focuses on curriculum development for an agricultural audience, the methods used to take theory through to implementation could be transferable for additional subject matter educators and learners. The needs and responses of University faculty and community based educators during our projects are included in this session. Those simply interested in farming and their local food system may find this session of strictly personal value.

Learning Outcomes

Participants in this session will learn of the experiences we had when researching, developing, delivering and evaluating two non-formal adult education curricula. Learners in this session will be better prepared to address specific concerns of their local clientele. This is expected to be accomplished through a deeper understanding of the process of identifying needs and delivering meaningful programming.

Session Description

While the subject matter of this session is agriculture audience specific – the process of critical thinking that provides the base of our work as progressive educators is applicable to most anyone working with adult learners. We followed a path that started at theory. We then worked through research to accumulate and develop information. This was followed with delivered education. We modified both curricula due to a formal evaluation. The outcomes of these efforts suggest best practices that may be meaningful for non-formal adult educators from most any walk of life or professional practice.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
