2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

This study examines social functions and institutional characteristics of selected social enterprises providing open learning sources in order to update our knowledge about open and distance education for adults.

Target Audience

Practitioners, students and instructors who are interested in social entrepreneurship and open & distance learning

Learning Outcomes

The session participants will learn:
1) a converging consensus on the concept and principles of social entrepreneurship in relation to open and distance adult learning,
2) the social and economic objectives of open learning sources in social entrepreneurship,
3) cases of leading social enterprises providing open learning sources and their concrete activities, and
4) the sustainable impact of social enterprises in adult education upon the societal welfare.

Session Description

Given the growing need for open learning sources, several independent organizations have initiated distance education to meet that learning need as well as financial sustainability. Those organizations manifest themselves in their social entrepreneurship as their primary objective is to contribute to social development drawing upon entrepreneurial strategy. The conception of social entrepreneurship can be applied to the dissemination of knowledge and the extension of learning opportunity in adult education. As a result, the variety of open learning sources is currently available to limitless adult learners. Many social enterprises are providing educational services to adult populations by employing innovative strategies and technologies in pursuit of their social purposes. Those social enterprises are motivated to fill market gaps left by traditional educational institutions. Therefore, it is meaningful to examine the social roles and functions of those social enterprises in order to understand how social entrepreneurship is improving adult, open, and distance education.
