It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Using Non-traditional Methods for Non-traditional Students

Session Abstract

Older, non-traditional students sometimes encounter barriers, whether they are returning students or first-time college students. This presentation examines unique approaches so students can prepare themselves for success.

Target Audience

Those engaged in Lifelong Learning programs and/or any organization offering programs to Baby Boomers and beyond. Those who are associated with the aging field and are assisting older learners in gaining new skills as well as degrees and/or certificates for re-entry into the workforce.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn how one educational institution, Sinclair Community College, is assisting older, non-traditional students prepare for college success in unique ways. Participants will also learn specific examples and stories about students who achieved their goals.

Session Description

Students who are new to college or returning after a lengthy time away are faced with several questions, including "How can I be successful?"; "What can I do to prepare myself?"; "Will I be able to do the homework and take the tests?"; "How will I find my way around campus?"; "Will other students accept me?"; and others. Sinclair Community College is using Ohio's "Program 60," whereby students age 60 and better may audit classes tuition free, and other elements of its College for Lifelong Learning program, to engage non-traditional students. For example, students have begun by taking non-credit classes to gain new skills, then audited classes to build self-confidence, and finally proceeded to credit classes. Other students have audited a class in a particularly challenging subject before taking the class for credit, to ensure success. These unique approaches offer a pathway that helps students achieve their educational goals.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
