RESISTANCE: Strategies for Supporting Schools to Respond to Gender Pushback in the Community

Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 3:00 PM–4:20 PM PDT
J West
Workshop Description

Frustrated from pushback when supporting a transgender or non-binary student whether working toward a gender-inclusive policy in your school district or reading a book like I Am Jazz in your classroom? Across the country, educators and school districts are targeted by hate groups with unwanted media attention for simply doing their job—providing a safe and welcoming school climate for all students. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to review several case studies in which schools and school districts persevered and continued to support genderqueer youth despite pushback. Talking points and strategies will be shared along with a brief review of constitutional protections that protect LGBTQ youth.
