Strategies for Building Affirming and Inclusive Schools
Workshop Description
Creating safe, affirming, and inclusive school communities require a multi-prong approach. This workshop will cover the cornerstones of social change—inclusive curriculum to increase knowledge; enumerated policies to set guidelines regarding behavior; and facilitated dialogues to promote affirming attitudes.

Timothy Kordic, Los Angeles Unified School District
Presenter Bio
After being a classroom teacher for a decade, Timothy Kordic, MA, began working in health and prevention education. Over time, he has worked in violence-, alcohol-, tobacco- and other drugs- prevention-education programs. He oversees comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention for his district and manages the LAUSD HIV/AIDS Prevention Unit funded by CDC DASH. Part of his work is surveillance on LAUSD student health behaviors through multiple surveys and programmatic research.
Judy Chiasson, PHd, Los Angeles Unified School District
Presenter Bio
Dr. Judy Chiasson is a coordinator in the Human Relations, Diversity, and Equity Office of the Los Angeles Unified School District. She advocates for safe and affirming campuses for students, staff, and families by creating policies, practices, and curriculum that are affirming of sexual orientation and gender identity. Chiasson is recognized as a national leader in LGBTQ concerns in K-12 education.
