2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

Reduced sleep quality research will be discussed as it affects adult learners related to thinking and learning, health problems, psychological issues, aging, academic and work success, fitness, etc..

Target Audience

Adult educators working with college students and distance learning students that are concerned about grade trends and retention. Adult learners with multiple life responsibilities that are currently continuing their education or combining work and education. Older adult learners and other individuals who are curious about the impact of sleepiness on their health. Policy makers or administrators that are scheduling courses for adult learners.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will have empirical research findings from several studies that illustrates the impact that sleepiness can have on behavioral changes, memory lapses, academic success, fitness levels and obesity, cognitive and psychological functioning, successful work patterns, and success with distance learning formats of either very early or very late course offerings. Recent empirical research studies using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index questionnaire will be shared as it relates to college age students and senior adults. Other information will be shared as it relates to sleep issues and health impacts and costs currently under review in several ongoing research studies.

Session Description

Learners, and those educators that work with them, are not always aware of the impact of lack of sleep on the learners’ or the educators’ health, reasoning ability, coping mechanisms, ability to learn efficiently and to remember, etc. Recent studies also reflect the significance of lack of sleep in new patterns of working and studying online, number of accidents in the workplace and on our highways, health-related issues and disease, appearance including weight gain, and even making sound judgment. Alerting adult learners to the seriousness of reduced sleep quality may help them to improve their functioning in the classroom, their workplace and in their own homes. “Work-arounds” will be provided that the audience can use in their own lives to support their learners. A PowerPoint and other handouts will be provided for the adult educators to use.
