When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Extending Extension: Adult Learning Theory and Practice Applications in Cooperative Extension

Session Abstract

We will explore applications of adult learning theory and practice to help address current challenges faced by Cooperative Extension. Through shared experiences and lessons learned we will develop future possibilities.

Target Audience

This session is targeted to individuals who are currently associated with Cooperative Extension education, research, and/or administration, and to individuals who aspire to expand their practice or research into Extension contexts. This group includes academic faculty, Extension educators and administrators, and external service providers from industry and government agencies. Because of the broad scope of Extension services, we will address issues that will interest and benefit individuals from academic, private, or public settings who work in community development, consumer education, conservation, or sustainability efforts.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the historical context and current status of Cooperative Extension in the U.S.
2. Describe how Extension has adapted to recent economic, demographic, and political changes and opportunities for adult learning applications as a result of those adaptations.
3. Enhance knowledge of ways in which adult learning specialists have collaborated with Extension in research, farmer education, Extension educator professional development, and policy impacting agriculture, conservation, and sustainability practices.
4. Appreciate “lessons learned” by peers based on their experiences collaborating in Extension contexts.
5. Develop a plan for applying their experience and expertise in adult learning to Extension contexts.

Session Description

Cooperative Extension is one of the largest organizations in the U.S. providing adult education to individuals, families, and communities. Historically, Extension educators have expertise in their professional domain (for example, agriculture, nutrition) yet have limited background in educational theory. Many developed their instructional skills working with clients one-to-one and face-to-face. With recent funding cuts, Extension services have become more centralized and educators are challenged to develop effective educational programs for larger groups of learners and to integrate online learning technologies into their practices. These circumstances provide many opportunities for adult learning specialists. The session facilitator has 10 years of experience collaborating with Extension in research, farmer education, extension educator professional development, and policy development. In the session, the facilitator will share her experiences and resources, participants will share their experiences, and we will develop a collective list of lessons learned and future possibilities for applications of adult learning in Extension.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
