Adult learning and Assisted Living Facilities: A Collaborative Evaluation Approach

Session Abstract
Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) in Florida represents a significant opportunity for adult learning experiences. This session discusses the challenges and promise of planning and evaluating meaningful programs for older adults.
Target Audience
Adult education practitioners currently (or contemplating) working with older adults will benefit from the presentation. The intersection of cultural, political, social, and economic interests and influences are creating significant demands on families, government, and the business sector. Adult education can play a tremendous role for all stakeholders, including the administrators and staff of the thousands of assisted living facilities (ALF) where many older adults reside. This session will also have relevance and importance for any individual who has (or soon will have) family members in ALF: Information presented will provide an overview of current research and best practices.
Learning Outcomes
Learners will:
1. Engage in a participant-centered, interactive, meaningful, and research-based session.
2. Describe and discuss of individual experiences of participants with programs for older adults.
3. Interpret current research and its relevance and application to their settings.
4. Contrast and compare planning, implementation, and evaluation strategies.
5. Discuss the features and merits of collaborative evaluation.
6. Define measurable outcomes and responsibilities for all stakeholders.
7. Reflect on how best to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to improve adult learning experiences for the elderly.
8. Construct a tentative action plan to discuss with colleagues, partners, and targeted participants.
Session Description
Importance
According to the 2010 US Census:
1. The older population is an important and growing segment of the United States population.
2. More people were 65 years and over in 2010 than in any previous census.
3. Between 2000 and 2010, the population 65 years and over increased at a faster rate (15.1 percent) than the total U.S population (9.7 percent).
Impact
1. Purposeful adult education programming for ALF residents will improve the physical and cognitive well-being of older adults.
2. Targeted and meaningful adult education can play a key role in decreasing the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults.
3. Collaborative program evaluation of existing and future education programs for older adults will benefit ALF residents, administrators, and staff.
4. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research will contribute to existing literature, informing practitioners and other stakeholders with an interest in planning and implementing education programs for older adults.
