2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

HRD: We Are Our Own Worst Enemy

Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 4:30 PM–5:45 PM EST
TB2
Type of Presentation

Workshop (60-75 minutes)

Session Abstract

Human Resource Development (HRD) is not thought of as the fast track to the “C” Suite. This presentation explores how educators can better position students to align HRD initiatives with organizational strategy.

Target Audience

This session is appropriate for graduate and undergraduate professors, HRD professionals, continuing education faculty and others who are responsible for designing, developing and delivering curricula and certification programs for the HRD function.

Learning Outcomes

This session will focus on providing actionable information and strategies that can be applied to Human Resource Development or Human and Organizational Learning Programs to provide graduate and undergraduate students with relevant and actionable problem solving and decision making tools. Specifically, from this session participants will be able to:
• Identify 8 critical performance factors
• Discriminate between organizational and individual performance factors
• Describe systems thinking
• Describe a Performance Perspective

Session Description

HRD is often viewed as the red-headed step child of the board room and not a fast track to the “C” Suite in business. Far too often HRD professionals are perpetuators of this Rodney Dangerfield “we don’t get no respect” mindset. Those teaching HRD have a responsibility to engage students and demonstrate the positive impact of an HRD function that is truly a strategic partner by providing individual and organizational solutions aligned with the organizations strategic direction.
The old maxim; “if all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail” rings true within HRD. If all you have is a training solution then everything is a skills and knowledge problem. Yet, research has most often the problem is not the people in the organization, but the organization itself. This presentation will focus on many areas where HRD should examine before assuming a problem is best solved with training.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
