Alma & Primo UX: an AX (African experience)
Conference or Developers Day
Conference
Abstract
In 2013, Stellenbosch University (SU) participated in the Cape Library Consortium (CALICO) investigation into new technologies of next-generation library platforms. Following this enquiry, SU conducted its own in-depth study of shortlisted platforms. They had a long list of requirements that had to be met besides very specific local needs. In 2016, SU became the first in Africa to choose Alma and Primo for optimizing their library services. In 2014, SU performed web/discovery usability testing (Primo 1st implementation) and these recommendations were effected with the Primo adoption (2nd implementation 2016). With this large-scale project's management, there were highlights but there are aspects that could have been handled differently and many lessons to be learned. Managing change and associated emotions remained a challenge throughout the implementation process and beyond especially with regards to different workflows, rethinking and reskilling.
